| o | Ukiyoe was initially called Ukie that
means the picture to show things coming up from the canvas because of
its perspective representation and realism when it first came out in
Edo period. The perspective drawing devised in Europe had not been introduced into Japan in Edo period. That's why Ukiyoe was very innovative to Japanese people at the time. Although Edo people didnt't know what it was exactly, they had such a good sense that they didn't call Ukie a 3D picture(Rittaie in Japanese). The artists who draw Ukie were called Ukieshi (Ukie artist in Japanese). Architectural perspective---I have been drawing architectural perspective, which can be called architectural Ukie because of its perspective representation and realism. Ukie artists give me a great interest because it seems to me that we share the same technique. So,I want to analyze every picture of Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido by Hiroshige Utagawa, a great master of Ukiyoe who gives me the greatest interest, using a perspective drawing and computer graphics. Also, I want to take a trip to all locations of the Tokaido to sketch. Here is my homepage to show what Hiroshige was thinking and trying to draw in my own view. I am going to introduce my sketches of all stages of the Tokaido I've visited. I went to 1,2,3,4 on my last field trip. Please click "Stage guidance page" above and visit"Hiroshige Utagawa", "The Tokaido by 3DCG","Tokaido sketch","Soba gourmet" and"Woodcut Print" |
